The farm was covered in a white, crispy layer of frost this morning on the last harvest day for the extended season! We are so thankful for such a wonderful growing season and for you, our members! We truly could not do it with out all of you!
As soon as the ice thawed, the crew was out harvesting your kale and Jabrila would like you to know that your kale might not be as crispy as it has been in previous boxes. The frost was harder than we thought, and the kale may be sweeter for it, but should be eaten as soon as possible. We are afraid the kale’s storage-ability was compromised due to the frost.
You will also be getting either green cabbage or romanesco this week, as the cabbage didn’t size up as quickly as we would have liked so there was not enough for everyone.
I was able to get up to the barn and out to the fields today to take some photos of the last CSA harvest day for the year. The sun was shining without a cloud in the sky, but the wind was icy cold whenever it blew!
Some of the crewmembers were up at the barn washing leeks and I was able to get them to pose for a group photo. The rest of the crew was down in the parsley. The parsley was planted in our three-season field houses, and the plastic has already been taken off for the winter, so as to not be ruined by heavy rain, wind and snow.
Next to the field houses is a field that has been prepped with compost, tilled and made into beds, then covered with plastic so we can get into the soil in the early spring, when the rainy weather makes it impossible to till.
We have already planted some over-wintering Walla Walla onions in part of these beds. Even though they appear small now, they will be sending down roots and hopefully when Spring brings warmer temperatures, they will have a head start and grow to be the delicious spring onions we sell at farmers markets and include in our first CSA boxes.
We are already planning for next season, and will spend many hours this winter reviewing the year, making sure that we are doing our absolute best to bring you fresh, healthy, local food from our farm.
