The Farmers Market harvest has an abundance of tomatoes and we have enough to offer bulk flats for those of you who would like to do some canning or dehydrating. We have mixed heirlooms, as well as slicers in the Early Girl and Big Beef varieties….we’ll even harvest some Green Tomatoes now for those of you who crave that delicacy! Welcome to week #14 of the CSA season, and what a glorious week it’s promised to be….warm and sunny for the duration. Last night was the Full Moon, generally called the Harvest Moon. In traditional skylore, the Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox, and depending on the year, the Harvest Moon can come anywhere from two weeks before to two weeks after the autumnal equinox. For us in the Northern Hemisphere, the 2014 autumnal equinox comes on September 23, so the September 8-9 full moon counts as the Northern Hemisphere’s Harvest Moon.

The Harvest Moon isn’t always bigger, brighter or more pumpkin-colored than other full moons. It’s special because, at this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere, the time between successive moonrises – from one night to the next – is shorter than usual. But this year, 2014, the Harvest Moon is a bit bigger than usual … because it’s a supermoon.

This year’s Harvest Moon qualifies as a supermoon because the moon turns full less than one day after reaching lunar perigee – the moon’s closest point to Earth for the month. Hope you were able to catch a glimpse of the Moon last night, but if not, it will still be lovely this evening and should be rising about 7:50pm in the Eastern sky.

We’re getting excited about the Fall crops getting ready to harvest….the first of the winter squash has been harvested, and is always a favorite of the crew. Although we will all miss the luscious strawberries and tomatoes, thoughts of cuddling by the fire with a thick bowl of squash soup warms our thoughts for winter. Not ready to go there yet though!!

We do have a few of the Late Season shares left, so if you would like to continue on through the week before Thanksgiving, get in touch. It’s also not too early to be the end of season Harvest Celebration on your calendar! This year it will be Saturday, October 18th from Noon to 4pm….we’ll share a potluck as always, and take a hayride down to the pumpkin field to pick out your Jack-O-Lantern. We sure hope you’ll join us!
